I'm forwarding my research by refining what constitutes as a Men's Health magazine and drawing ideas from this to form the basis of my first drafts.

Features/ topics

  • Exercise

  • Mental health/ tackling stress

  • Diet

  • Health tips

  • Cars

  • Fashion

  • Celebrity endorsement

  • Strong colour palette

  • Direct gaze, stereotypical male representation

  • Bold typography

  • Hyper-masculine, unattainable standards for the average reader

Focusing on the Men's Health magazine in particular, it's clear that they dominate the market as the UK's best-selling men's magazine. While this is a success, it also means that there is a lack of variety for men when choosing what to read. This ultra-macho representation of men, who are almost always a celebrity figure, isolates the reader so that they aspire to often unattainable standards of health and self-improvement. As well as this, it is unlikely that my entire target demographic would fit this magazine as 16 year olds have vastly different interests to 25 year olds and topics such as weight loss shouldn't dominate the content they consume.

All the main images remain similar, only varying between famous models and topics on the page. I am going to ensure that my covers keep the same foundations but provide something different on each edition so that readers don't get bored being presented with a new version of the same content.

THE WEBSITE

The website anchors itself to the magazine itself with the same colour scheme and bold, masculine designs while also being easily navigable to ensure a smooth viewing experience.

These parts of the website: Mental health, food and other sporting features are what I intend to transfer to my own website as well as ads that legitimise the site itself. I have to ensure that any ads I include were entirely created by me in order to meet the brief requirements.

In terms of digital convergence, I have found that the design and general tone of the magazine must be carried over to the website. Links and other articles provided on the website must be in-keeping with the usual content they provide and sticking to repetition of similar articles and topics is preferred as they know what their consumers most enjoy and don't wish to stray from this and risk losing consumers.
