This research makes up a part of my Men's Health magazine idea

PHOTOGRAPHY

As part of a lifestyle magazine on men's health it's fitting that I provide a contents page which has some smaller images of food and a plug to the recipe within the magazine. In some aspects food photography is more easily executed as it is a form of still life photography but many articles and advice forums stress the importance of composition, lighting and attention the detail. You are advised to:

- Limit the depth of field

-Arrange your background to give context

- Take advantage of natural lighting

Not only is it part of the brief to include multiple images but it also adds credibility to the piece and showcases my skills. Lifestyle magazines tend to appear very superficial and edited to be face tuned and brightened to create an artificial appearance.

Food photography is a chance to engage a range of viewers on common ground- a love for food. You can create any atmosphere, that once it covers a page creates a great atmosphere. To add to the credibility of the brief, images that anchor towards the theme of health drive home the aim of the magazine.

FOOD MAGAZINES

Baking magazine Features

  • Simple yet complimentary colour palette, attracts the reader and links the food to the text

  • Tweaked to perfection, each detail has to be put together perfectly

  • All subtitles relevant to the overall topic

  • Barcode

  • Plugs

  • Consistent typography

  • Accessible language

  • Minimalistic in comparison to certain magazines such as a Celeb gossip edition

Cooking magazine features

  • Mixture of colours that don't necessarily tie into the food

  • More boisterous with typography, related to the type of food?

  • Barcode

  • Plugs

  • Sub-imagery that takes up a fair amount of space

When comparing these two food-based magazines, there are stark differences between them. While the bakery edition likely targets a female audience with its clean and tidy layout and attractive colour palette, the GoodFood cooking edition has a brighter more maximalist layout perhaps to target a male audience with the main image being a large and overflowing burger which could be seen as a masculine food. If my magazine on Men's Health is to include food, it seems as though a more savory and healthy option is the way to go to appeal to my audience.
